Our fine arts program covers drawing, sketching, and painting. And for a lot of students — particularly younger ones — it ends up being the class where patience gets built almost as a side effect of learning technique.
Drawing and sketching form the foundation, starting with basic shapes, proportion, and shading before moving into more detailed subjects like portraits and still life.
Painting classes build on that foundation across watercolor, acrylic, and other mediums, with students working at their own pace rather than against a fixed curriculum timeline.
Here, the goal isn't to finish fast. It's to learn to see.
For younger students, art class often does double duty — fine motor skill development wrapped inside something that feels like play rather than practice.
Watching a six-year-old go from scribbles to a recognizable, deliberate sketch over a few months is one of the more visible kinds of progress the academy produces, and parents notice it quickly.

For adults, the appeal tends to run in the opposite direction — less about skill-building from scratch, more about returning to something set aside years ago.
A lot of adult students describe painting class as the one hour of their week where nothing is urgent and nothing needs to be finished by a deadline. That's a legitimate reason to take a class, and we treat it as one.
Instructors work with students individually within the group, correcting technique — how a pencil is held, how paint is mixed, how proportion is judged by eye — without pushing everyone to the same style.
What to buy, what's worth spending on and what isn't. Especially for beginners who don't know the difference between decent watercolors and ones that will frustrate them.

Not just a sketchbook
The academy occasionally puts together displays of student work, giving art students the same kind of visible outcome that music and dance students get from a stage performance — a chance to see finished work up on a wall rather than tucked away in a sketchbook.
